The drug discovery process is complicated, difficult, and lengthy. In an effort to identify pre-clinical candidates quickly, many discovery research programs try to save time by rushing through the hit-to-lead and lead optimization process without considering all the challenges which may impact a successful progression to the clinic. This can result in costly failures during pre-clinical or clinical development.
