Free Online PBSS Seminar: Regenerative Medicine – Cutting Edge Technologies for a Brighter Future

December 6, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 12:40 pm

Free

Date/Time: Dec. 6, 2021; 8:30 – 12:40 (Pacific)

Regenerative medicine includes the generation and use of therapeutic stem cells, tissue engineering, and the production of artificial organs. Regrowing, repairing, or replacing damaged or diseased cells, organs or tissues has the potential to tremendously benefit patients and our society as a whole. The mini-symposium intends to give the attendees some insight into these various areas of regenerative medicine.

The speakers will present on the translational development of the tympanic membrane to improve or enable hearing as well as the development of biomaterials for the cornea to improve the vision. What development techniques are available and what challenges must be overcome?

Another presentation provides insights on how to possibly treat fatal diseases of aging. When telomeres become too short, cells can’t function, which is the major driver of disease and aging. Using mRNA encoding telomerase (TERT mRNA) has the potential to reverse telomere shortening.

The development of biomaterials for orthopedic applications is another important area in regenerative medicine. One approach is to deliver therapeutic proteins that enhance healing of implants. Coating the surface of implants with these proteins like paint can make them more readily available for cells of the body to interact with.
